I Can't Sell, Won't Sell, Am Scared of Selling, Don't Want To Sell
Believe it or not, you sell (promote) yourself all the time
Remember that job interview? you didn't sit there saying "I don't really want to work for you, I just need the money, so can you hurry up please. Or I don't find you interesting and want to meet with my friends as soon as possible. Or how about when you delivering a funny joke? What you are actually doing is saying please like me... I am funny!
So is there any difference between you promoting yourself in a job interview or promoting a product to a customer?
You may want to fool yourself that there is, but the truth is that there really isn't any difference. On both occasions, one person is trying to influence another for their benefit.
In order to lead a sucessful inspiring life, you need to promote yourself.
The fact that you have read this far would allow me to assume that you may want to improve your life in some way shape or form. Well you should bear this in mind, the only real difference between winners and losers is that winners want to win. There are no victims only volunteers. If you are going to make the best of your short stint on this planet, you need to believe in yourself and your ability to succeed.
"Sure I will just go out there and tell everyone how fantastic I am" I hear you say with a slight hint of sarcasm.
Like other skills you have learnt in your life, this is a journey and not a destination. The ability to promote is just a skill which can be easily learnt. The ability to master selling takes longer but you do not need to master selling to be successful, all you need to do is try and you will find a way that works for you.
Whats stopping you?
Humans are a pretty complex bunch and we come with all sorts of baggage. Most times a fear or dislike of selling is related to a personal experience. This personal experience may have nothing to do with selling whatsoever and may have to do with issues such as self esteem, the need to be liked or your perception of sales people. Work out why you are uncomfortable with promoting and double check yourself to see if this is an acceptable belief. Once you know why you do not like or want to promote, see if you can change your perspective on this point.
The Typical Sales Person
The stereotypical picture of a sales person is a pushy individual who will say anything (yes possibly lie) and who will not take no for an anwser. These people really are more rare than you may think, but because they annoy and in many cases offend our beilef system so much, we attach that experience to someone trying to promote somehing to us and don't want to be perceived to be just like them.
You don't really even have to sell, you can be completely honest and caring.
If you are have or know of a product / service for a fair price that could be of real benefit to another person, would there be anything wrong with you promoting the product or service to another person and getting compensated for your efforts? No.
If you know your product / service's benefits and merely inform another person of how the product / service could be of benefit to them, that is infact Selling.
You Win, they Win.
Follow up once or twice and leave the decision up to them.
So how have I done in selling this explanation to you?
Now you can see, when broken down, you are already a sales person, like it or not.
